PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article carrying device capable of adequately transferring articles and shortening the time required for carrying articles. SOLUTION: A transfer device 12 has a beam detection sensor 22 for detecting the distance in the vertical direction to a beam 8 with a range having the width in the vertical direction being a detection range K. A control means performs the beam detection operation for detecting the distance in the vertical direction to the beam 8 by the beam detection sensor 22 when the transfer device 12 is moved to the proximal side of the target transfer position in the vertical direction, and the operation of an elevating/lowering driving means is controlled to elevate/lower the transfer device 12 to the target transfer position based on detection information of the beam detection sensor 22 in the beam detection operation.
