PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide "navigation device and the free way retrieving method" capable of easily retrieving a free way even when the name of the free way is not known accurately. SOLUTION: This navigation device comprises an icon display section 31 for screen-displaying the icon for each road type of the free way, and a retrieval key setting section 32 for setting, as a retrieval key, a free way name of the road type corresponding to the icon selected by user operation from the screen-displayed icons. An icon constituted by a mark similar to the mark actually used on a paper map or on a guide sign on a road is screen-displayed, and the retrieval key of the free way is set by making a user select a desired icon. Thus, even when the user does not know the free way name, the free way name can be set as the retrieval key on the strength of the icon constituted by the mark similar to the actual world.
