The method involves supplying a control unit (28) with a signal corresponding to the total voltage drop at a motor (10) during current flow, and a measurement signal for motor current corresponding to voltage drop at an armature (12). The signals are compared with motor-typical characteristics of the voltage at an exciter. A signal corresponding to the amplitude of the armature voltage is provided as a substitute signal to the control unit. An independent claim is also included for a switching arrangement for rotary speed control of a commutator series-wound motor.
