PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting apparatus and its controlling method, by which apparatus and method, the cutting edge of a cutter can be surely set in the initialized direction. SOLUTION: The cutting apparatus has a cutter 8 which is held such that the cutting edge can eccentrically turn about a rotational axis perpendicular to media 50, and a cutting edge direction initializing means for setting the direction of the cutting edge of the cutter 8 in the initializing direction along a definite direction when the cutting edge has come into contact with the media 50 at the start position of cutting. The cutting edge direction initializing means comprises an actuator for moving the cutter 8 up and down relative to the media 50, a media feeding mechanism 10 and a cutter head moving mechanism 30 for moving the cutter 8 relative to the media 50 in the two axis directions in the plane parallel to the media 50, and a cutting edge direction resetting means 9 for resetting the direction of the cutting edge of the cutter 8 in the direction crossing the initialized direction in the state that the cutting edge is separated from the media 50.
