A grid polarizer is provided with a transparent substrate having ridges arranged substantially parallel at least on one surface;light absorbing layers (A) laminated on the top surfaces of the ridges; and light absorbing layers (B) laminated in grooves between the ridges. In a cross-section vertically intersecting with the longitudinal direction of the ridge, the cross-section area of the light absorbing layer (B) is 20% or more of that of a space portion of the groove, the height of the ridge is less than four times the interval between the light absorbing layer (A) and the light absorbing layer (B), and the height of the ridge is 0.4-1.55 times the width of the ridge.
