Although high pressure mercury lamps exhibit excellent absolute output value and emission efficiency, they have a drawback of a large etendue in addition to poor instantaneous lighting performance and short lifetime, and thereby they are not necessarily suitable for condensing light to a light bulb. Therefore, high pressure mercury lamps cannot be appropriately adapted to light bulbs the size of which has been being reduced more and more. Accordingly projectors employing a laser light source are predicted to be employed. However, it has been difficult to condense the light from a light source efficiently while suppressing occurrence of speckles and relaxing restriction on the use environment. An image projector of the invention comprises a light source (101) generating a light having coherent characteristics, a modulating section (102) for modulating the generated light, a projection optical system (106) for projecting the modulated light, and an oscillating mechanism (112) for oscillating the optical path of the light before or after it is modulated by the modulating section (102). |
