PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer with a hard disk drive capable of performing the optimization of the hard disk drive without increasing the power supply capability of the power unit of the printer and the number of the system resources for the system control of the printer, and also provide a method of controlling the printer. SOLUTION: An electric power required when the printer is operated at a sleep mode controlled electric power value in a period from the transfer of the printer to a sleep mode or the interruption of the optimization of the hard disk drive to a predetermined time. With the electric power obtained by deducting the electric power actually consumed in the sleep mode from the obtained electric power, the optimization is automatically performed for the time period shorter than that for which the optimization of the hard disk drive is allowed.
