PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally operate an elevator in accordance with situations even if an emergency earthquake news flash is received when rescuing passengers from one car where they are confined to the other liftable/lowerable car in the elevator provided with the two cars lifted/lowered inside a hoistway independently. SOLUTION: The elevator is provided with the two cars 2, 3 lifted/lowered inside the hoistway 1 independently, and performs rescue operation to rescue passengers from one car 2 where they are confined to the other liftable/lowerable car 3 when such confinement occurs. The elevator is provided with a receiving device 30 for receiving, from outside, an emergency earthquake news flash delivered after an earthquake occurs, determines whether or not the rescue operation can be completed until the principal motion of the earthquake reaches when the receiving device 30 receives the emergency earthquake news flash during the rescue operation, and continues the rescue operation if completion of the rescue operation is possible.
