PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus and a method of performing the retaining control of a temperature in a recording head, wherein power consumption is suppressed and degradation in image quality immediately after the start of recording is reduced even if the retaining control of a temperature is executed from a non-recording period in which preparatory recording operations such as the conveyance of a recording medium, a preliminary discharge and the like are performed. SOLUTION: In the recording apparatus for recording an image on a recording medium by discharging ink from a discharging orifice by the use of the thermal energy of a recording element, the following processes are executed; namely, first temperature adjustment processing is executed to adjust a recording head temperature to an adjustment temperature during the non-recording period in which preparation for recording the image on the recording medium is executed by discharging ink from a discharging orifice. In the first temperature adjustment processing, the adjustment temperature to adjust for executing preliminary discharge prior to the recording of the image on the recording medium is higher than the adjustment temperature for executing the preliminary discharge during recording on the recording medium.
