An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to extend the lifespan of each power device by reducing stress applied to the power device of an air conditioner. An air conditioner comprises a fan(10) and an induction motor(20). The induction motor includes a rotor for rotating the fan, a main winding for rotating the rotor by receiving current from a single phase power source, a sub-winding for starting the rotor, and a capacitor for generating a phase difference between the main winding and the sub-winding. A phase detector(30) detects phases of the main winding and the sub-winding. A controller(40) stops rotation of the induction motor when the phase difference between of the main winding and the sub-winding is smaller than a reference value.
