344,581. Raising sunken vessels. SARJANT, L. G., Chalets Cottage, Farley,. Salisbury. Jan. 2, 1930, No. 225. [Class 68 (ii).] A device for lifting sunken submarines and other vessels comprises a caisson or buoy 18 contained within a larger shell 19. Flexible loops 20, of chain &c., are fastened to the caisson 18 and pass through holes in the shell 19, and passing through them are the lifting cables 17 attached to loops 3 on the submarine 1. Air is pumped through the pipe 15 into the caisson 18, which rises in the shell 19, drawing in the loops 20. and gripping the chains 17 firmly. As an additional precaution against slipping, double-hooked links 22, Fig. 3, may be fitted in the chain 17. The loops 20 pass over them as the caisson is lowered by means of the cables 11, but the hooks and loops engage as the caisson &c. rises. |
