A plasma display apparatus and a display method thereof are provided to reduce calculation amounts by controlling the variation of sustain pulse periods according to luminance conditions of sub-fields. A plasma display apparatus includes a plasma display panel(11), a detector(25), and a sustain pulse period controller(26). The plasma display panel includes plural scan and sustain electrodes, which are disposed in the same direction, and plural address electrodes across the scan and sustain electrodes. The detector detects display load rates of plural sub-fields. The sustain pulse period controller controls a whole sustain pulse period at respective sub-fields based on the display load rates which are detected by the detector. When the display load rates are varied from large rates to small rates, the sustain pulse periods are shortened so that a vacant time is generated. |
