The use of mono- or tricyclic pyrrinone dyes (I) for dyeing keratin materials is new. The use of pyrrinone dyes of formula (I) (including their optical or geometric isomers, tautomers, hydrates, other solvates and acid or base addition salts) for dyeing keratin materials is new. n, p : 0 or 1; X 1 - X 3N, C, CR 4> or NR 5>; X 4N, C, N +> or (if n = 0) CR 6> or NR 7>; Z : alkylene, CO, SO or SO 2; R 1> - R 3>, R 6>H, halo, optionally substituted alkyl, alkoxy, NH 2, mono- or dialkylamino, SO 3M, COOM or cationic or other heterocycle; or R 1> + R 2>group completing an optionally substituted, 5- or 6-membered unsaturated hydrocarbon ring; M : H, alkali metal or ammonium; R 5>, R 7>, R 8>H or optionally substituted alkyl; R 4>as for R 1>; or a pyrrinone residue of formula (II); L : alkylene or alkenylene, bonded to X' 1, X' 2 or X' 3; R' 1> - R' 3>, X' 4, n', p', z', R' 8>as for R 1> - R 3>, X 4, n, p, z, R 8> respectively; X' 1 - X' 3C, N, CR' 4> or NR' 5>; R' 4>as for R 1>; R' 5>as for R 5>; s : 0 or 1; provided that at least one of X 1 - X 4N.
