PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which high-purity sphingomyelin, particularly a human type sphingomyelin and plasmalogen type glycerophospholipid are produced by simple operation from chicken epidermis in good yield. SOLUTION: The method for producing the sphingomyelin and plasmalogen type glycerophospholipid comprises the following steps: (A) a step of extracting whole lipids from chicken epidermis powder and carrying out a drying treatment, (B) a step of subjecting the dried whole lipids obtained in the step (A) to an extraction treatment with a mixed solvent of an aliphatic hydrocarbon-based solvent and a water-soluble ketonic solvent and separating the dried whole lipids into an insoluble part consisting essentially of the sphingomyelin and a soluble part, (C) a step of subjecting the insoluble part consisting essentially of the sphingomyelin obtained in the step (B) to the extraction treatment with a mixed solvent of water and the water-soluble ketonic solvent and removing a non-lipid component contained in the soluble part and (D) a step of carrying out a drying treatment of the soluble part obtained in the step (B), then conducting the extraction treatment with the water-soluble ketonic solvent and separating and recovering an insoluble part consisting essentially of the plasmalogen type glycerophospholipid.
