The method involves performing a resonance relationship control for a resonance mode of an order. Phase alternation compensation for a vibration-mode of higher order is performed by adjusting a nominal value of an motor inertia, which is used in a failure controller (10) for the resonance relationship control, so that the values is larger than a value of an actual motor inertia. A motor is provided for driving a sewing machine. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a motor.
