PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exercise apparatus utilizing a translating support assembly, and a method of using the same. SOLUTION: The exercise apparatus includes a frame, a crank system supported by the frame and having first and second crank coupling locations, a first flexible support system, and a second flexible support system. The first flexible support system includes a right foot support member with a first right-side guide element, a left foot support member with a first left-side guide element, a right-side movable member with a second right-side guide element, a left-side movable member with a second left-side guide element, and a first flexible element. The first flexible element is connected to the frame and the first and second right-side guide elements. The first flexible support system can be operated to move the first crank coupling location when the right foot support member moves. The second flexible support system has a second flexible element. The second flexible element is connected to the frame and the first and second left-side guide elements.
