<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric field emission type electron emission element which can be formed by a simple method without deteriorating a degree of electric field concentration largely, which is sharp and highly uniform, and which is large in mechanical strength, and to provide a planar display deice equipped with this. <P>SOLUTION: The electron emission element 22 is formed of a substrate 12, a cathode electrode 24 installed on the substrate, and a support body 30 having a side wall 31 formed of either an insulator or a semiconductor on the substrate, and erected by having a certain angle against the surface of the substrate, an emitter 34 formed on the side wall of the support body, and a gate electrode 28 to apply a voltage to the emitter edge part.
