PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a coating on a surface of a substrate, in which the heating of a coating material is selective and sufficient to induce complete melting of the coating material and to enable mechanical binding of the coating to the substrate on which the coating material is applied without excessively heating the substrate so that properties of the substrate is not markedly deteriorated. SOLUTION: The coating material 10 contains powder particles 12 that are sufficiently small and susceptible to microwave radiation 18. The coating material 10 is applied to the surface of the substrate 14 and subjected to microwave radiation 18 so that the powder particles 12 in the coating material 10 bind to each other by the microwave radiation 18 and sufficiently melt to form a coating on the surface of the substrate 14.
