<p>A method and an apparatus for controlling an SOA(Semiconductor Optical Amplifier) for use in a PON(Passive Optical Network) are provided to enable a gain control circuit to control the gain of an amplifier on the basis of power level signals and correction data by using a dummy laser signal, thereby processing an upstream burst data signal while keeping the gain of the SOA at a predetermined level regardless of device aging. An SOA circuit(25) comprises an amplifier, a dummy laser generation circuit(46,47), a first PD(PhotoDetector)(31), a second PD(32), a memory device, and a gain control circuit. The amplifier has an input port and an output port, and is disposed along the main signal line of the optical amplifier. The dummy laser generation circuit has an output unit joined to the main signal line and inputs a dummy signal to the amplifier. The first PD detects the power level of the dummy signal inputted to the amplifier and outputs a first power level signal. The second PD detects the amplified power level of the dummy signal outputted by the amplifier and outputs a second power level signal. The memory device stores correction data about the gain properties of the amplifier. The gain control circuit receives the input of signals from the first PD and the second PD, has an output unit joined to the amplifier, and controls the gain of the amplifier on the basis of the first power level signal, the second power level signal, and the correction data.</p> |
