The sensor unit (210) has an electrode, another electrode and a solid electrolyte (214), which is connected to the electrodes. The electrodes are arranged within the sensor unit. The latter electrode is connected with a reference gas chamber (242) over an exhaust air channel (240) and comprises a mixer conducting material. The conducting material comprises an oxide material of Perovskite type and/or of fluorite type. The conducting material comprises an electrically conducting oxide material of fluorite base and Perovskite base. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a physical characteristic of a gas mixture in a gas chamber, in particular for determining of an oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas of an internal-combustion engine.
