A method of preparing a catalyst for partial oxidation of methylbenzenes is provided to lower the reaction temperature based on the equal yield in the production of corresponding aromatic aldehydes from methylbenzenes. A method of preparing a catalyst for partial oxidation of methylbenzenes comprises the steps of: (a) producing tungsten oxide by a sol-gel process; (b) preparing a tungsten oxide slurry by a wet milling process; (c) doping the prepared slurry on an inorganic carrier to obtain a catalyst; (d) drying the obtained catalyst; and (e) firing the dried catalyst, wherein the step(a) comprises treating tungsten acid with hydrogen peroxide, and wherein the catalyst for partial oxidation of methylbenzenes is represented by the formula, WOx, where W denotes a tungsten atom, O denotes an oxygen atom, and x is a value determined by the oxidation state of W. The step(a) comprises: a first step of treating tungsten acid with hydrogen peroxide; a second step of dispersing a resulting material of the first step into a dispersion medium to produce a sol; and a third step of gelling the sol obtained in the second step. The first step comprises the steps of dissolving tungsten acid into hydrogen peroxide to prepare a solution, and decomposing a non-reacted hydrogen peroxide contained in the solution using a platinum mesh. Further, the dispersion medium is water, alcohol or a mixture thereof.
