PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily prevent a degradation in image quality and short life of an image carrier by accurately measuring a quantity of discharge even during image formation. SOLUTION: A charging quantity calculating section 90 receives an integration period setting signal to be output from an integration period setting section 92 for setting an integration period, and a charging current in which an AC current Iac and DC current Idc to be output from the current detecting section 82 overlap. According to the integration period setting signal, the charging quantity calculating section 90 integrates the charging currents to be supplied to the charging member 24 by the high voltage supply section 80. Thereby the charge quantity calculating section 90 calculates a quantity of charges. The charge quantity calculating section 90 outputs the quantity of charges (the result of integration) to an AC current adjustment section 94. The integration period setting section 92 integrates charging currents output by the current detecting section 82, produces an integration period setting signal from the result of the integration and the result of the second derivative of the result of the integration, and outputs this signal to the charge quantity calculating section 90. The AC current adjustment section 94 compares the quantity of charges calculated by the charge quantity calculating section 90 with the target value of the quantity of charges, and controls an AC power source 86 according to the result of the comparison.
