A reinforcing element for articles made of flexible materials, comprises an assembly of metallic wires, including filaments of synthetic materials if desired, characterized in that all or a part of the individual metal wires are undulated in such a way that said assembly has points of contact and intersticial spaces. Individual wires may first be undulated and then assembled to form a strand or cable with the result that the strand or cable has intersticial spaces. The undulations may be sinusoidal or in the form of a helicord. Each undulated wire may be incorporated into a section of supply material enveloping the undulations. The reinforcing element, when embedded in a flexible article such as a tyre, belt, tube or conveyer belt, has its interstitial spaces filled by the material of the article and this is stated to give the article elasticity, suppleness to flexion, and resistance to shocks. |
