A method for cooking food or for sterilisation using stem and microwaves, characterised in that the food to be cooked (A) or the items to be sterilised are introduced together with an appropriate amount of water (E) into a watertight closed vessel (1-6), and in that the water is boiled and vaporised under pressure using a microwave field generated by a microwave generator (2) such as a magnetron, and sent into the vessel (1-6) via a waveguide (3) and a watertight pressure-resistant and microwave-transparent hatch or connector (4) mounted in an opening (5) formed in said vessel (1-6).
