PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon fiber excellent in adhesion between a resin and carbon fiber in the method for producing carbon fibers which has a burning process and surface electrolytic process. SOLUTION: In the method for producing a carbon fiber, the carbon fiber is subjected to the surface electrolytic process after subjected to a washing process with a liquid so that the sum of the decreasing rate of the amount of gas generated which has a mass number of 41 and the amount of gas generated which has a mass number of 43 obtained by temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry may be equal to or more than 10 mass%.
