PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL device having a high luminous efficiency and a long lifetime and an iridium complex to be used for the device. SOLUTION: The iridium complex is represented by formula (1), wherein R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>each independently represent a specific group and at least one of R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>represents a group having 2 or more carbon atoms; R<SP>5</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>each independently represent a specific group and at least one of R<SP>5</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>represents a specific group of electron accepting nature; and R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>do not form a ring by bonding with each other.
