PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOSITION FOR THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF EPILEPSIC SEIZURE-DERIVED NEURONAL DEATH CONTATINING ETHYL PYRUVATE AS AN ACTIVE INGREDIENT

An ethyl pyruvate is provided to show cognitive delay improving effect by inhibiting neuronal death of a CA1 region and a CA3 region of hippocampal formation induced by kainate, the activity of inflammatory microglia, the activity of astrocyte and the cytokine which is COX-2(cyclooxygenase-2), TNF-alpha(mouse tumor necrosis factor-alpha) or IL-beta(interleukin-1beta), thereby being usefully used as a prophylactic and therapeutic agent of epileptic seizure. A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating epileptic seizure comprises an ethyl pyruvate as an effective ingredient, wherein the epileptic seizure is induced by neuronal death of damage of hippocampal formation or by kainate administration.
