PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique which can prevent more securely degradation in reliability caused by breakage or the like of a valve gear and an intake or exhaust valve which interferes when the synchronism between the drive of a piston and the drive of the intake or exhaust valve is impaired and the interference between the piston and the intake or exhaust valve occurs. SOLUTION: When a load greater than or equal to a predetermined load is imposed on a lifter 5 because of the interference between the piston and a valve 6, a first check valve 13 is opened. Thus, the oil in an oil pressure chamber 5b is discharged to the outside of the lifter 5, and the substantial length L1 of the lifter 5 is reduced.
