Preparation of a hydrogen (H2) product (I) from a starting material (II) containing glycerol involves: (a) converting (II) into an intermediate (III) containing H2 and carbon monoxide (CO), by removal of contaminants and pyrolysis of glycerol; and (b) separating H2 from (III). (III) is not subjected to reforming treatment before the separation of H2. An independent claim is included for corresponding apparatus for generating (I), comprising pyrolysis apparatus for carrying out step (a) and H2 separation apparatus for carrying out step (b), provided that no gas reforming apparatus is located between the pyrolysis and separation apparatus.
