PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To show the optimization guidance of the width dimension of each element so as to develop a stable cleaning performance over a long period, regarding a cleaning unit where an application member for applying a solid lubricant is disposed on the downstream side of a cleaning blade, and a leveling blade is disposed on the downstream side of the application member. SOLUTION: When the widthes of the cleaning blade 103, a brush roller 104, the solid lubricant 107 and the leveling blade 105 are set to L1, L2 L3 and L4 respectively, the widths of L1 to L4 are set so as to satisfy L4≤L1<L3<L2, (wherein L4>image formation width). By establishing L3>L1, the entanglement of the blade is prevented, by establishing L3<L2, the lubricant is usefully consumed.
