A method for controlling a digital photographing apparatus, and the digital photographing apparatus using the method are provided to convert the resolution of images stored as image files in a recording medium into a preset resolution and store the image files with the preset resolution in the recording medium, thereby maximizing user's convenience. A method for controlling a digital photographing apparatus comprises the following steps of: simultaneously displaying images on a display unit by reproducing plural image files stored in a recording medium(S11); displaying images selected from a user to be discriminated from images which are not selected from the user(S13); checking whether a conversion signal is received by the operation of the user(S15); and lowering the resolution of the images, stored as image files corresponding to the images selected by the user, into a preset resolution and storing the image files, to which the preset resolution is applied, in the recording medium(S19).
