Disclosed is a contact lens material which has a flat and smooth surface and is excellent in water wettability and durability. Also disclosed is a method for producing a contact lens material having a contact lens base and a coating film formed on at least a part of the base surface, wherein the coating film is formed by subjecting the contact lens base to a plasma polymerization process in a mixed gas atmosphere containing methane and wet air, and then subjecting the base to a plasma process in a non-polymerizable gas atmosphere. Further disclosed is a method for producing a soft contact lens wherein a soft contact lens is obtained by causing the contact lens material produced by the above-described method to contain water.
