#CMT# #/CMT# The device (1) has a polarized pulse laser (10) e.g. longitudinal single transverse mode laser, having a polarization direction which do not collinear with the double refraction axes of a refraction optical fiber (6). The rotation of the polarization is performed on the axes using the Kerr effect. An output polarizer (9) is positioned in an output of the fiber. The output polarizer selects the polarization in the output of the fiber. #CMT# : #/CMT# An independent claim is also included for a method for generating a short pulse. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# Device for generating a short pulse of order of few tens or few hundreds of picoseconds. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The device generates the short pulse using simple laser at low cost. The device has a simple structure, so that the maintenance of the device is avoided. The device utilizes the lasers that have blocked modes to obtain good levels of power. The polarization direction of the laser is not collinear with the double refraction axes of the fiber, and the rotation of the polarization is performed on the two axes using the Kerr effect, thus reducing the duration of the short pulse at exit of the polarizer.
