A sewing machine is provided to hold a sewing initiation end portion of an upper thread by an upper thread-holding unit until the last needle is dropped, thereby preventing the upper thread from being bound with stitches of a lower thread. An upper thread-holding unit holds a sewing initiation end portion of an upper thread below a needle plate(108). A bobbin unit(120) binds the upper thread and a lower thread with each other below the needle plate. A thread-cutting unit(130) cuts the upper thread and the lower thread between the needle plate and the bobbin unit. The upper thread-holding unit is moved along a lower surface of the needle plate between a needle lower position, which is on a passage line of a sewing needle(104), and a standby position, which is away from the needle lower position. The upper thread-holding unit is in a released state at the needle lower position. A thread-holding unit is in a holding state between a mid-position and the standby position, wherein the mid-position is defined on the way from the needle lower position toward the standby position. An operation controller moves the thread-holding unit to the standby position when a needle of a first stitch is dropped, and moves the thread-holding unit to the mid-position when the last needle is dropped. The operation controller moves the thread-holding unit to the mid-position at the cutting time, thereby cutting the sewing initiation end portion of the upper thread.
