Twin roll caster comprises a casting roll (12) having longitudinal channels (14) extending from one shoulder portion (28) adjacent a side dam (11) at one end of the roll to a similar shoulder portion adjacent a side dam at the other end of the roll. The side dams act to confine a molten metal casting pool. Cylindrical plugs (16) with closed outer end faces (16a) close both ends of longitudinal cooling channels (14). Cooling water flows through radial channels (18) in stub shaft (13) and radial channels (15) in the casting roll (12) into the longitudinal cooling channels (14) through apertures (17) in plugs (16).
