A surface light source device and an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) are provided to propagate light projected from a horizontal point light source to every corner of a light guide so as to maintain brightness uniformity over a display area. A surface light source device includes a light guide(4) and a horizontal point light source(3). The light guide has a concave portion(4a) or a hole in a region corresponding to a display area. The horizontal point light source projects light having directivity in a direction parallel with a light-projecting face of the light guide. The horizontal point light source is arranged in the concave portion or the hole.
