An apparatus and a method for determining a transmission mode in a wireless mobile communication system are provided to select and operate a BF transmission mode or an SDMA transmission mode according to each cell or sector in the wireless mobile communication system having a multi-cell structure, thereby improving a scheduling gain and the entire capability of the system. A method for determining a transmission mode comprises the following steps of: storing channel information determined by using channel feedback information or a sound sequence which an MS(Mobile Station) transmits(601); determining a metric value(603); comparing the determined metric value with a preset threshold value(605); selecting an SDMA(Space Division Multiple Access) transmission mode when the threshold value exceeds the metric value(607); and selecting a BF(Beamforming) transmission mode when the threshold value is smaller than the metric value(609).
