ESTIMATION OF BACKGROUND NOISE IN A VARIABLE RATE VOCODER

A method of generating a current estimate of background noise (B') in a frame of speech in a speech signal (S(n)) comprising a plurality of frames. The method comprises: calculating an energy level (R(0)) of a frame of the speech signal (S(n)); obtaining an estimate of background noise (B) in a previous frame of the speech signal (S(n)); and generating, the current estimate of background noise (B') based on the energy level (R(0)) and the estimate of background noise (B) in a previous frame of the speech signal (S(n)). A speech processor configured to process a speech signal (S(n)) comprising a plurality of frames is also described.
