<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding pyruvate decarboxylase enzyme having improved decarboxylase activity, substrate affinity, thermostability, and activity at different pH, and to provide a method for producing ethanol by using a host cell including a nucleic acid sequence encoding the pyruvate decarboxylase enzyme. <P>SOLUTION: The invention provides a recombinant expression vector including nucleic acid with a codon usage which allows for high level expression in a variety of host cells, a recombinant host cell comprising the expression vector, host cells further comprising other ethanologenic enzymes, and methods for producing useful substances, e.g., acetaldehyde and ethanol, using such host cells. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
