PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine provided with a bulk-of-fabric sensing means capable of accurately sensing the bulk of fabrics inside a rotary drum with simple constitution by restraining an influence resulting from an uneven frictional resistance to a drum rotating axis. SOLUTION: The washing machine is provided with the rotary drum for housing a wash, a water tank including the drum and elastically supported inside a washing-machine main body, a drum driving motor 7 for rotating the drum, a rotary-speed sensing device 33 for sensing a rotary speed of the motor 7 and a control part 31 for controlling rotations of the motor 7 from an output sensed by the sensing device 33. For sensing the bulk of the fabrics, the control part 31 accelerates the rotations of the drum with a specified torque by the motor 7 to measure an accelerative time T required from a rotary speed A up to a rotary speed B; the control part 31 stops the motor 7 from rotating the drum to make it rotate through its inertia to measure a decelerative time t required from a rotary speed C to a rotary speed D.
