A hydraulic differential 2 has a swash plate type variable displacement hydraulic unit 4, a fixed displacement hydraulic unit 6, a stationary housing 24, an input shaft 8 for coupling to a variable speed power source and an output shaft 10 for coupling to a constant speed load. Port plate 14 of the variable displacement unit is coupled to the stationary housing; and has a radial (circumferential) interface with port plate 20 of the fixed displacement unit. This radial interface minimises hydraulic thrust forces developed by the hydraulic unit, allowing lower capacity bearings to be used. |
