Classes 59 and 86 A multi-roll chocolate refining machine or similar multi-roll machine in which a feed roll is provided for supplying material to be treated to the lowest or first refiner roll and having nip adjustment means for the feed roll at each end thereof, includes a displaceable abutment for each adjustment means, said abutments being connected to a common member dependent upon a single shear pin, the arrangement being such that any displacement of the feed roll due to the entry of an obstruction in the nip causes the pin to shear. Each end bearing of a feed roll 1 of a multi-roll chocolate refining mill is carried by a pivoted lever member 3 adjustable about its pivot to move the roll 1 to or from the first refining roll by means of an adjustable thrust rod 8 contacting a normally fixed abutment 9. Each abutment 9 is formed as one end of a bell-crank lever pivoted on a fixed shaft 10, Fig. 3, whose other end is pivoted to a common bar 12 extending across the mill parallel with the roll axes. The bar 12 is formed with a transverse orifice 14 at one end which is engaged by a shear pin 13 secured to the mill frame, so that if an obstruction enters the mill and pressure on one or both end bearings increases the shear pin 13 breaks and the pressure at both ends of the mill is relieved. Movement of the bar 12 consequent upon shearing of the pin 13 causes a limit switch 21 to operate to stop the mill motor.
