The method involves receiving vehicle noises as an acoustic signal, and determining motor vehicle e.g. car, speed exclusively from speed-dependent frequencies of a frequency spectrum based on the acoustic signal. The frequency spectrum of the acoustic signal is determined. The frequencies are determined by a comparison with frequency characteristics. The frequency characteristics of the engine speed are assigned to air flow and/or the noise of tires of the vehicle. The frequencies exhibiting no dependence on the vehicle speed are filtered. An independent claim is also included for a navigation device comprising a position detection unit.
