Method to control an apparatus for variable timing of intake- and exhaust valves in a combustion engine

The method is for the control of a device to change the gas exchange valve timings of an internal combustion engine during the engine's stopping process, whereby a control valve can be brought into four control positions by means of an adjusting device. The method entails starting and stopping a defined phase position, switching off the ignition, adjusting a second or fourth control position to maintain the phase position until a RPM sensor records zero RPM, detecting of the RPM through the RPM sensor, maintaining the control positions for a predefined time span, and deactivating the adjusting device after the time span has elapsed.
