A honeycomb structure that even when at a given time, compulsory regeneration is carried out for disposal of PM having accumulated in filter (honeycomb structure), is capable of suppressing the occurrence of temperature difference along the longitudinal (laminate) direction through reducing of generated heat quantity to thereby prevent the occurrence of crack or other failure and melt loss of the honeycomb structure. There is provided a honeycomb structure consisting of a columnar honeycomb structure having multiple cells with cell walls interposed therebetween arranged along the longitudinal direction thereof, characterized in that when the honeycomb structure is dually partitioned by a plane parallel to either of the end faces of the longitudinal direction of the honeycomb structure so as to realize equal apparent volumes of the sections resulting from the partitioning, the sections resulting from the partitioning have apparent densities different from each other. |
