It is intended to provide an external preparation for skin, which has an effect of improving rough skin, and is excellent in feeling of use, particularly excellent in smoothness, free of stickiness, and excellent in stability. Further, it is intended to provide a cleansing agent for skin which is particularly excellent in usability, and has an excellent effect of removing cosmetics. That is, the external preparation for skin according to the invention is characterized by containing a block type alkylene oxide derivative represented by the following formula (I). Y-[O(EO)<SUB>a</SUB>-(AO)<SUB>b</SUB>-(EO)<SUB>c</SUB>-R]<SUB>k</SUB> (I) (In the formula, Y is a residue obtained by removing a hydroxy group from a polyhydric alcohol having 3 to 6 hydroxy groups, k is the number of hydroxy groups of the polyhydric alcohol, EO is an oxyethylene group, AO is an oxyalkylene group having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, and the respective groups are added in the form of a block. a × k, b × k and c × k are average added mole numbers of oxyethylene group, oxyalkylene group having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and oxyethylene group, respectively, and satisfy the following relationships: 0 = a × k = 100, 1 = b × k = 100, 0 = c × k = 100, with the proviso that (a+c) × k > 1. The ratio of the total oxyethylene groups in the formula (I) to the sum of the total oxyethylene groups in the formula (I) and oxyalkylene groups having 3 to 6 carbon atoms is 10 to 80% by mass.
