<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device provided with an overcoat layer and columnar spacers, which made a display area wide by improving display quality nearby an inner periphery of a seal material. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device has a color filter substrate 5 and an element substrate 6 stuck on one another with the seal material 4 provided enclosing the display area V, a plurality of colored films 40 provided on the color filter substrate 5, a light shield film 41 provided at a periphery of the colored films 40, the overcoat layer 42 for covering the colored films 40 and light shield film 41, and a first columnar spacer 7 provided in the display area V and on the overcoat layer 42. The overcoat layer 42 is provided in the display area V of the color filter substrate 5 and an area beyond a formation portion of the seal material 4 from the display area V.
