<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a person monitoring system and a person monitoring method in which a face image of a person to be monitored can be designated at an arbitrary timing from images being photographed by cameras A, B, C, D, E, F and the person to be monitored designated in the arbitrary timing can be traced and monitored by face collation with face images included in the images photographed by the cameras. <P>SOLUTION: The person monitoring system displays images photographed by a plurality of cameras A, B, C, D, E, F installed at locations within a monitor area on a display portion of a monitoring apparatus 20 and when a face image of a specific person is designated from the images being displayed on the display portion by an operating portion of the monitoring apparatus 20, the person monitoring system sets the face image of the designated person as a face image of a person to be monitored. A collation processing device 10 collates the set face image of the person to be monitored with the face images included in the images photographed by the cameras, and a collation result is displayed on the display portion of the monitoring apparatus 20.
