A short message transmission method in a keyphone system and a system therefor are provided to notify a telephone terminal linked with an extension that a voice message is left for the particular extension of the keyphone system where call forwarding is set, by using a short message type, thus a remote user can immediately know the fact that the voice message is received without frequently checking a voice mailbox. An office line interface(110) provides an interface function with an external office line. A voice mailbox(114) is configured to store a voice message for setting at least one of extension terminals(102a,102b) to a reception target. A short message generator(108) detects storage of the voice message, searches telephone numbers associated with the extension terminals by responding to the detection of the storage, and generates short messages for setting the searched telephone numbers to reception telephone numbers. A short message transmitter(112) enables the generated short message to be transmitted to the external office line through the office line interface.
