PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage device and a method for diagnosing a writing means capable of determining failure of a writing means at an early stage. SOLUTION: The storage device is provided with a means for writing data to a storage medium, means for making the writing means conduct electricity, means for measuring electrical characteristics of the writing means to obtain measured values of the electrical characteristics while the conducting means conducts electricity, means for storing the measured values of the electrical characteristics obtained by the electrical characteristics measuring means, and means for determining whether the writing means is abnormal or not on the basis of the measured values of the electrical characteristics stored in the storage means.
